HSAT offers the opportunity to learn from top teachers in our nation. With a cohesive curriculum that focuses on the core principles of the Alexander Technique, it provides its trainees skills in both individual and group teaching modalities. I feel that my training gave me the skills and knowledge to be an effective teacher, and continue to grow as a life-long student of the technique.
~~ Janet Rarick, certified Teacher of the Alexander Technique, Associate Professor of Music Career Development,The Shepherd School of Music, Rice University.
The Houston School for the Alexander Technique directed by Christine Lidvall opened its Alexander Technique Teacher Training program in September 2010. This four year program is designed to allow people with employment in Houston or surrounding areas to become teachers of the technique without having to move elsewhere to train. It is also available to students who want to pursue a more intense course of study for their personal use.
To enter the training program, students must have had a minimum of 30 hours of study in the Alexander Technique with a certified teacher. The HSAT Teacher Training Program is based on the work of Marjorie Barstow, a second generation teacher of Alexander’s work who graduated from F.M. Alexander’s first training course. Her tradition of working with activities and in groups is a core element of the HSAT course. To learn more about Marjorie Barstow, visit this web site. In addition students and trainees study Alexander’s procedures and his writings. A range of teachers trained in the Barstow and other traditions are regular guest teachers for the program. The student to teacher ratio in the school is five to one.
